PINOCCHIO (1911) by Giulio Antamoro

NOVEMBER 25, Thursday, at 7:00 PM
In occasion of the 140th anniversary of the first appearance of Pinocchio on Il giornale per i bambini (Newspaper for children), in 1881, the Philippine Italian Association and the Embassy of Italy are happy to present at the 15th edition of the International Silent Film Festival the first known film that brought Collodi’s famous puppet to the silver screen.
A captivating 54-minute silent in which Pinocchio will live a thousand and one adventures, including an unscheduled encounter with the Redskins and the Canadian army.

Trivia: According to film historian Prof. Nick Deocampo, this Pinocchio film would be the 1st Italian film commercially screened in the Philippines, in 1912.

This film is presented in partnership with the Cineteca di Milano.

ORIGINAL MUSICS BY: VIDMAR-TIRO-TIRO TRIO

The Vidmar-Tiro-Tiro Trio was formulated for this special occasion, it includes Tullio Vidmar– an Italian violinist and laureate in the Conservatorio of Music at Giuseppe Tartini di Trieste; Niño Cesar Tiro– a Filipino pianist who has been an accompanist for various groups and organizations; and Ena Marie Tiro– a Filipina sound-mixer and sound-engineer. They are based in Cagayan de Oro, where they have shared their passion for music by teaching young and aspiring musicians at the Liceo de Cagayan University Conservatory of Music, Theater, and Dance. They alone have composed a 54-minute original soundtrack inclusive of violin and piano, where Ena Tiro’s talent expands it into an entire orchestra. Thanks to them, the classic silent film, Pinocchio (1911), finds a new, modern, but always classic voice. Join us as we celebrate the craftsmanship of a classic film coupled with today’s brilliant artisans!

HOW TO SEE A SILENT FILM

NOVEMBER 25, Thursday, at 5:00 PM - Talk How to see a silent film

How to see a silent film will be the first talk of the International Silent Film Festival 2021, and will feature four speakers from Italy, Spain, and Japan that will provide us with the keys to access the silent world!

For the occasion we have invited:
Mr. Andrea Meneghelli, curator of the film collection at the Cineteca di Bologna in Italy, and Mr. Jay Weissberg, film scholar, critic, and artistic director of the Giornate del cinema muto di Pordenone (Pordenone silent film festival), a premiere event of its type in the world.

Mr. Meneghelli will take us to the very first years of the Silent era, when cinematographic shows were organized in theaters for the benefit of large crowds excited to see moving images. And he will discuss the challenges curators face today when they attempt to reproduce those shows for the cultural experience and celebration of film for today’s viewers.

Mr. Weissberg will share the experience of his festival in presenting silent films to the contemporary public and will focus on the crucial role of musical accompaniment in the viewing experience.
