POLI TECH STORY #3: ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

The Philippine Italian Association has partnered with the Politecnico di Milano to bring to the Philippines the Poli-Tech Stories:

a series of encounters on Politech Culture with Professors and researchers of this prestigious university.

With them we will hear stories of Science, Technology, Creativity, Human and Professional Stories, and finally stories of our Future!

The third of these encounters will be virtual, on Zoom, on May 18, at 5:00 PM.

Speaker of this Poli-Tech Story will be Professor
Nora Lombardini.
Associate professor in Architectural Restoration at Politecnico di Milano and PhD in Restoration and History of Architecture. Her research activity is on the study on history and theory of restoration; history of the construction phases of the buildings; analysis of traditional and modern construction systems; analysis of mechanical behaviour of historical structures; studies on the conservation of historic centres; research on enhancement of archaeological areas and modern architecture in Italy, Georgia and Bulgaria (in the last both cases about the soviet/communist period). Her attention is also focused on religious buildings of the Byzantine and Medieval period, as the church of S. Vitale in Ravenna, the mosque/museum of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (both of the VI Cent.) and the church of S. Michele Maggiore in Pavia (XI-XII Cent.).

Architectural Heritage as expression of local communities’ identity

The safeguarding of cultural heritage and, specifically, architectural heritage, as an expression of cultural identity, means the defense, as the 2011 Faro Convention argues, of human rights and is part of the concept of democracy. Therefore, there is a need for a collective participation in its protection and enhancement which concerns not only the governing bodies but also the communities that identify themselves in cultural heritage.

Governments have, in fact, the duty to interface with communities guaranteeing them the care of everything that can help to create "understanding, identity, cohesion and creativity" (Faro Convention, 2011).

It is evident that the extreme difficulty of implementing this process is answered by adopting all the most suitable tools for safeguarding the asset itself. The idea of protection is linked to the awareness that cultural heritage, and the architectural one, belongs to every people and this assertion assumes that it is not really the people, but are the guarantors government of the people who take charge of the protection of the goods which is awarded with universal value.

The connection between the government and the local community must create opportunities for heritage conservation. These opportunities are expressed through the understanding of the identity needs of individual communities, but also in the creation of opportunities for knowledge and work.

In fact, the conservation and transmission to the future of architectural heritage is grafted onto a production process that provides for the formation and creation of a specific labor market with technologies and specializations that, on the one hand, open up new opportunities. of work, on the other hand it accentuates the responsibility of the communities as a whole and in the singularity of its components.

Safeguarding architectural heritage, therefore, cannot be left to the conscience and initiative of the local community alone. The synergy of the government and the community itself must create the opportunity for a creative approach that overcomes the passivity of safeguarding, protecting and enhancing what it is recognized as heritage.

QUI RIDO IO / THE KING OF LAUGHTER

2021, Italy/Spain, drama, 132’, R13

SYNOPSIS: At the beginning of the 20th century, in Belle Époque Naples, theatres and the cinema were thriving. The great comic actor Eduardo Scarpetta was the king of the box office. Of humble origin, he made his reputation with his comedies and the character of Felice Sciosciammocca. The theatre was his life and around the theatre gravitated the whole of his peculiar family, composed of wives, partners, lovers and legitimate and illegitimate children, including Titina, Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo.

In 1904, at the height of his popularity, Scarpetta took a great risk: he staged a parody of La figlia di Iorio, a tragedy written by the greatest Italian poet of the day, Gabriele D’Annunzio. The evening of its première in the theatre all hell broke loose: the performance was interrupted by boos and catcalls and Scarpetta ended up being sued for plagiary by D’Annunzio himself. It was the beginning of the first ever lawsuit on copyright in Italy.

The years that the case took would be draining for him and his whole family. Everything in Scarpetta’s life seemed to be falling apart, but with the act of a great thespian he would take his fate into his own hands and win in the end.

POLI TECH STORY #2: FRAGILE LANDSCAPE

The Philippine Italian Association has partnered with the Politecnico di Milano to bring to the Philippines the Poli-Tech Stories:

a series of encounters on Politech Culture with Professors and researchers of this prestigious university.

With them we will hear stories of Science, Technology, Creativity, Human and Professional Stories, and finally stories of our Future!

HERE THE RECORDING OF THE WEBINAR

The second of these encounters will be virtual, on Zoom, on March 28, at 5:00 PM.

Speaker of this Poli-Tech Story will be Professor
Sara Protasoni.
She is the Head of the  M.Sc. in Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design Politecnico di Milano - Piacenza Campus, is associate professor in Landscape Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and is part of the Board of Landscape Architecture Doctorate Program at the University La Sapienza in Rome

At  Politecnico di Milano, she combines teaching with an intense activity of design and theoretical research on landscape architecture around three main lines of research: the issue of landscape in the context of the enhancement of cultural heritage; the design of the public space (for the Politecnico she has drawn up the redevelopment project of Piazza Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, inaugurated in May 2016) for sustainable and resilient cities; infrastructures and landscape in relation to climate change effects.

She is the author of several monographs and more than one hundred essays, published in books and magazines in the field. She has collaborated with several magazines, including DOMUS and CASABELLA, and has twice been editor of the magazine RASSEGNA directed by Vittorio Gregotti.

Fragile Landscapes: Around the Concept of Sustaining Beauty

In recent years, urged on by environmentalism and global ecological awareness, landscape architecture has begun to demonstrate its fundamental role not only in defining beautiful and efficient places to live, but also in guaranteeing the continuity of many eco-system services in the built environment that are crucial to primary processes, such as normalising the carbon and nutrient cycle, adapting to and mitigating climate change, capturing and purifying pollutants, filtering fresh water and combating desertification phenomena. This new global ecological vision, which is indispensable for better clarifying the ethical and technical commitment to environmental issues, is now even more urgently required by the proliferation of crises (including the Covid19 pandemic) in different regions of the planet that call for transformative action. The conference will present examples of the new commitment of landscape design to address the contemporary ecological crisis.

DANTE: The Poet and the Statesman

DANTE: THE he Poet and The Statesman

The Philippine Italian Association (PIA), the National Library of the Philippines (NLP), the Ateneo de Manila University, and the University of Asia and the Pacific have invited H. E. Marco Clemente, Ambassador of Italy to the Philippines, to present Dante Alighieri, the world known author of the Divine Comedy and “father” of the Italian language, from the point of view of history.

This lecture will focus on Dante the man, particularly the statesman, behind the Poet we all know. It will expound on Dante’s love for his hometown, Florence; on how he served his city as a Priore; and even on his theories on the state that led to his exile.

The lecture will reveal how the Divine Comedy alludes to Dante’s years as a statesman and how even the writing itself of the Divine Comedy was impacted by this fundamental period of his life.

Ambassador Marco Clemente graduated in 1983 from the Luiss University in Rome with a degree in Political Science. He joined the Diplomatic Service in 1984. He was conferred the award of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic in 2009. His two main Cultural passions are the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri and the Italian Opera, both of which have become, over his many years of service, instrumental in his diplomatic work.

Ambassador Clemente assumed office in Manila on 2 September 2021 as Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Il tiramisù

The Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, together with The European Diner, Pocofino, and Danesi Caffè, invite you to our "Il Tiramisù" event on May 18, 2021, from 5:00-6:00 pm.

Tiramisù is a medley of rich espresso, creamy mascarpone, and ladyfingers, all dusted to perfection in cocoa powder. One taste reminds us why the Italian name means "pick-me-up." Since coffee is the highlight of the dessert, it is crucial to use a quality coffee blend to create the perfect tiramisù.

This event will give you the chance to order a DIY Tiramisù kit featuring products from The European Diner and Danesi Coffee imported by Pocofino. Along with the Tiramisù kit, you will get access to an exclusive webinar where you will learn how to assemble authentic tiramisù and learn about the history of Italy's favorite dessert by none other than Paolo Durante, co-owner and executive chef of The European Diner. Representatives from Danesi Caffè in Italy will also be joining us to tell us more about their famous coffee blends.
