Lecture on Raphael and the Stanze della Segnatura
by James Freney, VP for Culture of the PIA
Abstract:
Italian Renaissance Art is iconic of Italy. Stops in Florence, at the Uffizi Museum, and in Rome, at the Vatican Museum, to see these masterpieces are musts of anyone who visits Italy for the first time. This lecture will focus on a particular room of the Vatican Museum, the Stanze della Segnatura, where 4 frescoes (1508-1511) of Raffaello Sanzio are featured. Talking of these paintings will make us talk about the Renaissance itself, its protagonists, its history, its centers, etc., in addition, of course, of allowing us to tell the story of the author of the paintings: one of the 3 most iconic masters of the Renaissance, together with Michelangelo Buonarroti e Leonardo da Vinci.
