L'ELISIR D'AMORE
This comic opera in 2 acts was composed by Gaetano Donizetti and Felice Romani (libretto). On may 12, 1832, the opera premiered in Milan at the Teatro della Canobbiana.
Although reportedly written hastily within a six week period, "L'elisir d'amore" was the most frequently staged opera in Italy from 1838 till 1848. Since then, it has been continously in the globalopera repertoire. Up until the present, it is the most often performed of Donizetti's compositions and has had a significant number of recordings. the famous tenor aria "Una Furtiva Lagrima" in particular has long been a favorite performance in musical theatres.
Set in a tiny hamlet in the Basque region of Spain towards the latter 18th century, the plot involves Nemorino, a down-to-earth worker who falls in love with Adina, a beautiful yet indifferent landowner. Enter the platoon of Balcore, a belligerent military man who seeks Adina's hand. Dulcamara, a wandering quack doctor self-proclaimed as Dr. Encyclopedia, intercedes on behalf of the simple peasant with the eponymous bottle of romance. With the timely gossiping of Adina's confidante, Gianetta, the humorous chain of events that lead to the predictable yet desirable conclusion is spurred on to its climax.
